The furor over the collision of an American reconnaissance plane and a Chinese F-8 flight aircraft brings the past and present realities of our relationship with China into sharp focus. The Chinese have let a new blast of their ancient resentments loose against the United States, a nation they describe as arrogant and hegemonistic. Their strident language of sacred sovereignty, national pride and victimization dominated the early stages of the Chinese approach to this unfortunate accident off Hainan.
