AS ONE voyager to another, Helge Ingstad was always kind about Christopher Columbus. He had done well to reach America, Mr Ingstad said. But of course the place had been discovered by the Vikings some 500 years earlier. Even Columbus's navigation was wobbly. He thought he had reached India, when in fact he had ended up in what are now the Bahamas. Mr Ingstad's hero was Leif Ericson.
