Apr. 12--SECAUCUS, N.J.--Framed by the reedy banks of the Hackensack River, politicians and environmental groups on Wednesday pledged new funding to preserve the river and a renewed push to protect the swamps of the Meadowlands as a national wildlife refuge.
On the day a national group called the Hackensack one of the nation's most endangered waterways, advocates held a strangely celebratory news conference, saying the designation would focus attention on the river's problems.
