ON AUG. 28, an RMS Titanic Inc. expedition crew journeyed 2 1/2 miles beneath the sea to the spot where the great sunken ship lay in two sections, half a mile apart.
The crew had been hovering over the wreckage for about a month, making more than 20 dives. Each time, the trek was equally dangerous.
Yet this was a particularly crucial dive in the three-man submersible, the Nautile. Using the Nautile's robotic arms, the crew would attach the last of eight lift bags to a giant chunk of the Titanic. They hoped it would be enough to finally bring the piece up.
