YOU'VE COME a long way from Petersburg, Matt Lauer. A long way.
He was Matt Lauer, host of ``PM Magazine'' on WXEX, Channel 8, in Petersburg early in the 1980s. Today, the 39-year-old Lauer has one of broadcasting's big jobs - I mean, really big - as co-host of ``Today'' on NBC.
The network didn't hesitate a moment in naming Lauer to succeed Bryant Gumbel, who earlier this month stepped aside after 15 years of early risings.
