On Dec. 17, Virginia Beach City Council once again will consider supporting a TRT proposal for a light-rail system.
Norfolk has already expressed support. If Virginia Beach also gets aboard, TRT will be empowered to apply for $4 million in federal funds for an 18-month light-rail study. That would ensure that light rail for South Hampton Roads is included in the federal government's five-year transportation plan.
Without Virginia Beach's approval, this region will not even be considered for federal light-rail funds for at least five more years, said Jane Whitney, who handles major-projects funding and programming for TRT. We will have missed that money ...
