THROWING ROCK SALT on your driveway or sidewalk to keep from slipping on the ice can hurt nearby trees and shrubs. It is one of the most toxic de-icers. Denny Schrock of the University of Missouri recommends in the December/January issue of Today's Homeowner magazine that you select a de-icer with ingredients that are least damaging to plants. Consider de-icing with fertilizer such as urea or ammonium nitrite. Used in moderation, such fertilizers won't harm plants, but they are corrosive to metals.
