AS THE SMELLS of water treatment chemicals, coffee, roasting peanuts and an occasional scent of curing hams wafted through the atmosphere over Suffolk in 1996, the economic development community in the city stayed fairly quiet until late in the year.
That's when QVC, the cable shopping network based in Wilroy Industrial Park, announced a $9 million expansion that would take the center to a million square feet. That's the approximate size of Hampton Roads' largest shopping center, Lynnhaven Mall in Virginia Beach.
QVC officials, at the time the announcement was made, weren't willing to say how many more jobs ...
