The small cottonmouth moccasin was swimming high in the water right down the center of West Neck Creek, its head straight up and its thick body undulating behind.
When the snake saw our kayaks, it stopped still and raised its head and body, almost as if it were on top of the water. Though tiny in comparison to a kayak, the moccasin stared right at us with confidence.
Trip leader Chuck Conley of Outdoor Experience Inc. told us to stop paddling. We kept a respectful distance away and stared back at the creature in the water up ahead. The stand-off lasted for about a minute before the snake moved over to one side of the ...
