Article: Unsung operas get hearing.(Scene)

Two new recordings of largely forgotten operas by major composers don't reveal unjustly neglected masterpieces. But these important new CDs of Giuseppe Verdi's "Jerusalem" (Philips) and Richard Strauss' "Die Liebe der Danae" (Telarc) shed fascinating light on aspects of the output of these beloved and prolific opera composers.

"Jerusalem" is a revision Verdi made of an earlier opera, "I Lombardi," and this first complete recording of the work is especially welcome in this centenary year of Verdi's death.
