ATLANTA -- Infants receiving their first three doses of diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis vaccine should be given first priority if a shortage of DTaP vaccine develops in the next few months, members decided at a meeting of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.

In late 2000, two of the four United States manufacturers of DTaP vaccine--Wyeth-Lederle and Baxter Hyland Immuno--announced that they were ceasing production of Acel-Imune and Certiva, respectively. That leaves just two DTaP vaccines licensed for the U.S. market: Aventis-Pasteur's Tripedia and Glaxo SmithKline's Infanrix.

There is no major shortage of DTaP currently, but the CDC's National Immunization Program is taking steps now to prioritize use of the vaccine in case the supply falls short in …
