About a quarter of a million refugees, trapped in the southern region of Guinea that protrudes into Sierra Leone and Liberia, are facing a "humanitarian catastrophe unknown by the Western powers," reports the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

While a majority of the refugees in camps are from Sierra Leone, a number of Liberians and Guineans who have been displaced by fighting have also cloistered in the area.
