WASHINGTON, D.C.--In a rare joint meeting in Washington, D.C., last week, federal and state animal disease control experts worked to coordinate tightened U.S. measures to prevent foot and mouth disease (FMD), the disease devastating livestock in the U.K. and Europe.
The March 29 meeting was called by Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman to coordinate heightened state participation in federal disease prevention measures. It was held at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) Veterinary Services facility at Riverdale, Md.
