Volunteers worked under sunny skies Friday to build dikes and sandbag homes in low-lying areas along the Mississippi River, which was running a foot and a half above flood level and rising.
Geneva Larson, 84, lives in the Town of Campbell on French Island, where the water was slowly creeping up her back yard. University of Wisconsin-La Crosse football players were out in force building a dike in front of her home.
Larson said even her driveway was closed off.
"This morning I was fit to be tied," she said. "And by the way, I can't swim."
At the northern end of the island, Randy Eddy Sr. and his family had already evacuated the belongings on their first floor. ...
