More than 15 billion jelly beans will be made for this Easter. If they were laid end to end instead of eaten, they would circle the Earth nearly three times.
Most experts think today's jelly bean is the offspring of a marriage between a fruit-flavored gelatin confection from the Middle East called Turkish Delight and the coating on France's Jordan almonds. Somehow, both confection-making processes made their way to the United States, where they were combined to form jelly beans.
Jelly beans became a favorite in the penny candy aisles of America's general stores, but it wasn't until the 1930s that jelly beans became an Easter tradition.
