DRY-FLY FISHING has always been considered classy, and even in these days of surgical nymph fishing, there are those who consider it the prettiest way to catch trout on a flyrod. When trout are rising to insects floating on the surface, it's sometimes the only way to catch them.
Traditionally, dry flies are fished upstream, and there are good reasons for that. For one thing, feeding trout usually face into the current, so when you come up behind them you can often get closer without spooking them. Also, when you strike a fish that takes the fly while facing away from you, you're pulling the hook back into its mouth, where it's more likely to bite and hold.
