With its IC-M502, Icom has made digital selective calling integral to its radio.
It's not a good day: The engine shut down from clogged fuel filters; in the troughs, cresting waves are higher than the wheelhouse, and the mate just informed you that the boat is settling by the stern. At times like these, the ability to send out a reliable distress signal shouldn't be dependent on a bad decision made months ago.
That's when you bought a new VHF radio and decided not to get the optional digital selective calling feature, which, if you had gotten it, would now be automatically sending out a distress signal with your position as part of the message.
