Article: Reduced CREB Expression May Underlie Neurotoxicity.(neurologic damage caused by HIV Tat protein maybe mediated by CERB neuroprotective protein under expression)

2001 APR 14 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- by Michael Greer, staff medical writer - Neurologic damage caused by the HIV Tat protein may be mediated by reduced expression of the neuroprotective protein CREB, researchers in Italy suggest.

G. Zauli and colleagues at the University of Chieti examined the process of Tat-induced neuronal damage to provide information on the development of HIV related dementia.

Zauli et al. found that exposing PC12 neuronal cells to Tat for more than 24 hours under a variety of conditions inevitably resulted in significantly reduced CREB expression in these cells.

Surprisingly, within 15 minutes of exposure to low ...
