THE WHITE HOUSE confirmed last week that the US has abandoned the Kyoto Protocol, a 1997 international treaty to limit global warming, because President George W. Bush does not believe the pact is in the nation s economic interest.
"The president has been unequivocal. He does not support the Kyoto treaty," press spokesman An Flcischer told reporters at a White House briefing.
Asked whether the US would withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol, Mr. Fleischer said that since the treaty had not yet taken effect "there was nothing to withdraw from."
