The Wisconsin Dells may be smack dab in America's middle, but it is definitely a beach town. Here are the T-shirt shops, the aqua-and-pink swimwear emporiums, the fudge stands that line every boardwalk.
Just one problem. Where's the ocean? Lake Delton is a 254-acre man-made lake popular with skiers (water and jet) and boaters. Nice, but not grand enough. The Wisconsin River is the scenic underpinning for this resort town, which draws 2.4 million visitors a year. But the once vital waterway is little more than a backdrop for the Dells now.
Then I realized . . . vast, wet, and wild? The answer was splashing me in the face.
