The Mississippi River spilled over more roads, seeped into basements and covered boat landings, prompting some residents of low-lying areas to head to higher ground.
The river had risen to just under 16 feet by midmorning today at La Crosse, close to 4 feet above the 12-foot flood stage.
The latest forecasts call for the river to crest at 17 feet early Wednesday, which is 12 feet above the normal level for most of the year in the La Crosse area, said Mike Welvaert, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in La Crosse. Original predictions called for the river to crest at 16.5 feet.
