With Hong Kong in a dither, Shanghai is quickly gaining prominence as the gateway to China. Roving correspondent TIMOTHY CHARLTON sends us this postcard from the rapidly developing city.
EVER SINCE HONG KONG WAS handed back to China in 1997, it has suffered something of an identity crisis.
Torn between its instincts to be an open society on the one hand, and its need to show filial piety to its new rulers to the north on the other, the city state has been seized by a crisis of confidence in its future.
