U.S. music historians have usually defined Latin jazz as a regional movement that emerged in New York City in the mid-40s or earlier, while ignoring the simultaneous developments that took place in Havana, Rio de Janiero, et al. Some of these "experts" have even disregarded the geographic expansion of the hybrid art form in recent decades by foolishly insisting that Latin jazz cannot exist without its nurturing Cuban clave. Needless to say, such dogmatic chronicles have paid no attention whatsoever to the importance of various undercurrents (with or without clave) of the subject in question.
