Nearing the checkout line at a Schaumburg pet store with her yellow Labrador, Kathryn Rains paused to let a man and his pit bull leave the store first.
Despite Rains' cautious step, what happened was chaos, a civil lawsuit seeking damages, and a debate over the company's open pet policy.
Outside the PetSmart store as Rains approached her car, the pit bull leaped from the back of a pickup truck and attacked her Lab, Homer.
