Ignoring a bone-chilling rain, 500 Russian Orthodox believers and clergy gathered recently in a park near the Kremlin to listen to more than a dozen speakers sound a shrill alarm, a call to action against vague forces said to be threatening Christians, Russia and, ultimately, the world.
The immediate cause of concern for these believers, and another 40,000 who have signed petitions across Russia, is a new government tax identification number designed to combat widespread tax dodging. For a range of dogged, vocal opponents, the tax IDs and accompanying barcodes are to be avoided at all costs because they contain the number 666, the sign of the Antichrist.
