After nearly two years of public hearings, letter campaigns and legal fees, Edward Hospital has quietly dropped its plans for a specialty heart hospital in Naperville.

The project was caught up in an appeals process after a state regulatory board rejected the concept last summer.

"We looked at the horizon and saw this appeal could take a very long time," Edward spokesman Brian Davis said. "It could have taken years."

Meanwhile, construction crews are moving along on a 71-bed, five-story addition on the northeast side of the hospital on Washington Street.
