EDMONTON, Alberta _ Joe Nieuwendyk, fashionably late if not anything, returned to the Stars' and Oilers' annual prairie nose-quilting and elbow festival Saturday night.
And there went the Edmonton party.
With a flick of his wrist, Stars center Nieuwendyk spanked home the third- period goal that decided this all-too-long, all-too-nasty, all-too-loud first-round playoff series. His goal, coming with overtime looming at just 2:53 to play, provoked an audible melancholy sigh from the 17,100 at the Skyreach Centre.
And when Mike Modano backhanded home an empty-netter two minutes later, the Stars had their 3-1 final margin and hockey night in Edmonton ...
