CARING FOR WOMEN IN REFERRAL CENTERS Maternity care in the community is essential, but women at high risk of obstetric complications or with unexpected problems need more care than the community can provide. Thus referral centers are needed, linked to the community by transportation and communication. By providing each woman with the level of care she needs, a referral network uses its resources to serve the most women (see Figure 3).
