HAVANA -- Chinese President Jiang Zemin's visit to Havana coincided with a significant convergence of interests between Cuba and China, two nations whose relations have been rocky at times.
Although Cuba has largely halted its economic collapse and has made progress in mitigating the impact of the US embargo, it still has trouble obtaining financing and accessing new technology, two areas where China is ready to help. For China, Cuba is a possible base for intelligence gathering against the United States and an opportunity to establish a presence to counter balance US support for Taiwan.
