Apr. 22--For more than 30 years, the idea has stood as the ecological Holy Grail of San Francisco Bay: Acquire thousands of acres of salt ponds ringing the southern edges of the bay for more than 20 miles.
Turn them back into tidal marshes. Plant native grasses and reeds. Reestablish ducks, shorebirds, fish and other animals lost after a century of dredging and development.
In short, rebuild the southern San Francisco Bay -- from Redwood City to Alviso to Fremont -- the way it was before the Gold Rush, although 7 million people now live in the Bay Area.
