TOFINO, B.C. _ I stood, coffee in hand, at the charter-boat office, waiting with a half-dozen others to book a whale-watching day trip.
But just as I handed over my credit card, the whales came to us.
"Orcas! In the harbor!" an excited voice crackled on a ship-to-shore radio behind the counter.
We ran out on the waterfront deck. The quarter-mile wide inlet, a tranquil waterway minutes before, began to buzz.
Two orcas undulated past just a hundred yards offshore, their sleek black-and-white bodies glistening in the sun-sparkled water.
