WASHINGTON--The studios and major record labels last week came under fire on Capitol Hill from two sources--senators impatient with the slow progress toward a legitimate alternative to Napster and retailers concerned that copyright owners mean to lock up the market for digital downloads for themselves.
During April 3 hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee to consider online copyright issues, retailers and online distributors accused the labels and studios of using the threat of online piracy to withhold content from legitimate operators while they develop their own, proprietary download services.
