Last Sunday night, during dinner with my cousin Kathy, we reminisced about Grandfather Mauer. Although he's been gone for 30 years, we remember him clearly.

Kathy warmly recalled all the times she'd seen Grandfather's eyes wrinkle up at the corners when a vanilla ice cream-topped slice of warm homemade cherry pie ended his dinner. Laughter cascaded over our words when we simultaneously remembered that, somehow, he always got the cherry pit.
