Like so many baseball-loving kids in the summer of 1961, I wanted Mickey Mantle to break Babe Ruth's single-season home-run record - if somebody had to do it - not Roger Maris.
Not only was Mantle a "true" Yankee, a pinstriper since 1951, but he was a storybook hero, part Hercules, part Huck Finn.
