'Heavy metal' tool shank rocks tough stainless steel

Innotec Stainless, Inc., Atlanta, GA, founded in March 1993, is a job shop specializing in the production of sanitary diaphragm valves for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Ninety-nine percent of the material used in the job shop's operation is Type 316L austenitic stainless steel, and machining ranges from easy to difficult. The machining processes are relatively straightforward, using CNC machine tools running programs that are generated on a CAD/CAM system. Quality control is performed with the use of basic gaging, including micrometers and calipers, and indicators on a surface plate.
