Zambia the slow, Malawi the poor
Both countries won their independence from British rule in 1963. Known until then as Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland, Zambia and Malawi share a common border and - by African standards - fertile soil. since independence, each has been ruled continuously by one man. Mr Kenneth Kaunda has arranged to be re-elected as president of Zambia six times; Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda is, more straightforwardly, the "Life President" of Malawi.
Similarities between the two countries end there. Malawi is dirt poor. Its average GNP per head in 1987 was $160, making it one of the poorest countries in the world. Just over 80% of its workforce ...
