Even though my isthmus yard was small in terms of square footage, it packed a wallop in terms of garden waste. There was no grass, just a solid mass of shrubs, bulbs, vines and perennials that generated enough trimmings and clippings that my husband built a big three-bin compost system using wood pallets.

It was a great system except for one problem - the same problem that plagues our wire bin system in the current garden. The bins are too cumbersome for me to open easily.
