As recently as last fall, the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center was in the running for a share of a $40 million cancer-research gift announced last week by local computer-services entrepreneur Raj Vattikuti.
When the decision came down, though, the money was split evenly between Henry Ford Health System in Detroit and William Beaumont Hospitals in Royal Oak.
Although Henry Ford and Beaumont are two leading area hospital companies, they are not in the same league as UM in cancer research and trials.
So how did Henry Ford Health and Beaumont edge out UM for a cancer-care gift even larger than the one made by Compuware Corp. ...
