NEW YORK -- Dress collections launched by sportswear firms haven't always been the easy sell for which retailers had hoped. Still, the power behind many of these labels and the success of several key lines have maintained merchants' optimism about this end of the business.
Store executives, who say lines from sportswear vendors are a small part of their dress buy, are increasing their purchases in this area not only with proven resources, but to test more recent entrants.
