During a line change, Eric Kardesh hurries off the field, pulls his helmet off his face and sucks in a deep breath.
He bends over and rubs his left hand over his right forearm where a bright red welt the width of a broomstick is forming. He grimaces, takes a swig of water and heads back out onto the field for another line switch.
The 17-year-old St. Charles East High School senior will re- enact the same scene a few more times during the course of the game and countless more during the season.
