Nearly 16 million Americans have diabetes. A third of them don't know it.
And the risk climbs with age. Among people 65 or older, nearly one out of five have the disease. Experts estimate that it costs the nation roughly $100 billion a year and exacts an incalculable toll in human suffering. But that's not what worries them most.
"We're expecting an epidemic of type 2 diabetes, not only in adults, but in children and adolescents," says JoAnn E. Manson of Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
