LELYVELD NAMED THE TIMES'S DEPUTY MANAGING EDITOR

NEW YORK, July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The appointment of Joseph Lelyveld as deputy managing editor of The New York Times, with the expectation that he will succeed Arthur Gelb as managing editor, was announced today by Max Frankel, executive editor. The change is effective July 16.

At the same time, David R. Jones, the editor of national editions, will become an assistant managing editor. Lelyveld will be succeeded as foreign news editor by his deputy, Bernard M. Gwertzman.

Gelb is due to retire from The Times's news department early next year and will move to a senior position in The New York ...
