THE SCARLET PROFESSOR - NEWTON ARVIN:
A Literary Life Shattered by Scandel
By Barry Werth.
Nan A. Talese / Doubleday, 336 pages, $26.
Grade: C
Barry Werth is best known for his in-depth research and detailed writing in books such as The Billion-Dollar Molecule and Damages, and so one would have high hopes for his latest work, The Scarlet Professor - Newton Arvin: A Literary Life Shattered by Scandel. However, this account, too often lacking in vivid detail and mired in uneven writing, never lives up to Werth's past work.
