Howard Gutowitz was living in France and teaching math when an idea dawned on him: his girlfriend's job shouldn't exist. She worked for France Telecom as an operator and it was her job to type and then transmit pager messages. Why couldn't people input their messages themselves, Gutowitz wondered.

He set to work trying to figure out a way that people could use the standard phone keypad, with its letter groupings, to easily type messages. Using his background as a cryptographer, Gutowitz searched for the perfect code that would make the task easier and avoid the tap-tap-tapping of multi-tap inputting.
