When Karen Schrock became executive director of Adult Well-Being Services in Detroit, she knew how to run a human-services organization, manage an office and work with a community.
She didn't know how to orchestrate the construction of a $1.2 million building.
But that's exactly what she and her staff had to do - while still running the nonprofit.
``I didn't learn that in school,'' said Schrock, whose organization provides services, such as meal preparation and transportation, that help older adults and adults with disabilities live independently. Coordinating a building project was a trying experience, she said.
