May 9--IN NEW MATH, A SURPLUS ADDS UP TO SHORTAGE: In 1995, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported there were 1,977,000 registered nurses--and the concern nationwide was that there was a surplus of these valuable professionals.
But in 2000, when the bureau reported 2,111,000 registered nurses, the worry was--and continues to be--that there would be a shortage. In fact, the American Medical Association projects that by 2020 the nation will need some 400,000 more nurses than will be available.
What's going on here? How can there be a shortage when we have more nurses ...
