THERE HAVE BEEN considerable interest and research in the health effects of exposure to ambient particulates. Recently, epidemiologic studies have shown positive associations between mortality rates and levels of particulate air pollution in U.S. cities.[1,2] Dockery et al.[2] found that mortality was associated more strongly with levels of fine particulate air pollution (defined as particles with an aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 [micro]m) than with levels of total particulate pollution. The study by Dockery et al.,[2] as well as other studies, suggest that fine particles are more toxic than total particles.[3,4] However, although epidemiological results suggest that ...
