May 9--The Mississippi River is listed as one of the nation's most endangered waterways, in large part because it is not allowed to flood as it has for millions of years. American Rivers, a national conservation group, this April ranked the Mississippi River number six on its annual list of endangered rivers. The Missouri River was named the nation's most endangered.
Flooding affects 1,642 structures within the 100 year Mississippi River flood plain, and 231,000 acres of agricultural lands are inundated on an average annual basis.
