2001 APR 29 - (NewsRx Network) -- by Sonia Nichols, staff medical writer - Although levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptor increase in the presence of myocardial ischemia, microvascular relaxation often remains impaired, scientists now say.
Harvard Medical school researchers have conducted a study comparing VEGF production before and after atrial devascularization in patients undergoing coronary bypass operations. Their findings indicate receptors for VEGF and other angiogenesis growth factors do not function properly after ischemic episodes.
