Faith-based initiatives
TWO RECENT articles in the CENTURY on President Bush's "faith-based initiative" provide analytic order to several views and misrepresentations about the administration's program ("Faith-based action" and "Charitable choice," March 14). But they do this at the cost of ignoring consequences for American politics.
Suppose that the faith-based office in the White House is held constitutional and persists. After all, social welfare programs sponsored by churches can be enormously effective, and many churches can use more money. Then the entire landscape of American politics is open to change.
